Buying a bike
Choosing a bike according to size: an important criterion
The size of a bike determines the adjustment of the saddle, the handlebars and the frame. This size depends on the age and sex of the person. The size of a bike is calculated in inches or centimeters:
an average-sized adult chooses a 35-48 cm bike;
a child, throughout his growth, chooses a bicycle from 10 to 24 inches.
There are few differences between a men’s bike and a women’s bike, except on the racing bike which has a sidebar for men.
For adults who do not correspond to the standard sizes, the design of a custom bike can be considered.
Buying a bike: which bike for which budget?
The average budget for a bike depends on the desired activity. In addition to the purchase of the bike and its accessories, it will be necessary to provide for the maintenance of the bike and the repairs.

If you are of legal age, domiciled in France and not taxable, aid may be paid to you for the purchase of a new electric-assisted bicycle which does not use a lead-acid battery and whose maximum power is 0.25 kw . This bonus will only be granted to you if you have benefited from aid paid by a local authority (town hall for example) for the same bike ( article D. 251-2 of the Energy Code ). The amount of state aid supplements the amount of aid granted by the local authority, and cannot exceed it. The combination of the 2 aids (State + local authority) is at most equal to the lower of the following 2 amounts: 20% of the purchase cost including tax of the bike or €200.
In addition, for any purchase of a new electric bike since December 1, 2019, Île-de-France Mobilités grants Ile-de-France residents aid equal to 50% of the price including tax, capped at €500 (or €600 for a cargo bike). . The aid application platform will be put online on February 20, 2020. Aid from Île-de-France Mobilités is calculated after deduction of local financial aid from which the applicant may benefit. The ceiling for all aid (local aid + aid from Île-de-France Mobilités) is set at €500 for a classic bike and €600 for a cargo bike.
